Abstract

Abstract

This book deals with the representations of Tito Lívio, Roman historian of the end of the first century BC, about the Senate of Rome. Representations as symbolic references, values, beliefs and worldviews of historically positioned individuals are commonly designed in texts and cultural artifacts that are intended to assist in the establishment of consensus and norms of conduct in a given society. In this sense, the book focuses on the opinions of the Roman author, inscribed in his Ab Urbe Condita Libri (Since the Beginning of the City), on the most influential institution in the Republic, the one that most needed to adapt to the new political situation of the Principality, at the time in which power was centralized by Otávio Augusto, first Princeps- Roman Emperor, great-nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar.

Abstract

Epictet, stoic philosopher of the 1st century C.E., was the slave of Epaphroditus, an imperial secretary of Nero and Domitian. Despite his condition, he was able to attend the classes of Musônio Rufo. Later, after his release, he founded a school in Rome, which did not last long, since Domitian expelled the philosophers from the city in 89 C.E. Epictet then went to Nicopolis, where he founded another stoic school, with many students, among them important figures of the Roman Empire. Like Socrates, Epictet wrote nothing. His philosophy came to us through the notes of his disciple Lucio Flavio Arriano Xenophon, who recorded the teachings of Epictet in eight books, four of which were lost, which composed the Diatribes of Epictet. The work is prefaced by a letter from Arriano to a certain Lucius Gelius, in which Arriano affirms that the Diatribes are nothing more than transcriptions of the lessons of Epictet. That is the reason why the work has been attributed since antiquity to Epictet.

Abstract

This book encompasses papers presented at the XXVII Classical Studies Week (2014) of the Federal University of Ceará. The Symposium was consecrated to the bimillennial celebration of Augustus’ death, and proposed discussions about cultural dialogues between Greece and Rome under Augustan ideology. How do rhetoric, philosophy, literature and history engage in such dialogues and in such controversial ideology? The papers in this book highlight aspects of that discussion, and are divided into three sections: Section I contemplates philosophy, rhetoric and politics, particularly in the relationship between young Octavian and Cicero; Section II contemplates Augustan literature (Horace, Virgil, Tibullus and Ovid); finally, Section III approaches history and Greek comedy through Plutarch.

Abstract

Abstract

Entries have always offered a valuable contribution to our knowledge of public, social, economic and cultural life in ancient Rome. Emphasizing the importance of epigraphic documentation, specifically highlighting the contribution it provides to the knowledge of the political dynamics of the Roman world is the aim of the essays collected in this volume. The contributions touch upon themes ranging from the study of the Fasti and triumphal inscriptions to imperial politics, from the role of the municipal elites to the policy of integration and granting of citizenship, up to the meaning that the ancient authors themselves attributed to the epigraphic document.

Abstract

Questions of ethnic and cultural identities are central to the contemporary understanding of the Roman world. The expansion of Rome across Italy, the Mediterranean, and beyond entailed encounters with a wide range of peoples. Many of these had well-established pre-conquest ethnic identities which can be compared with Roman perceptions of them. In other cases, the ethnicity of peoples conquered by Rome has been perceived almost entirely through the lenses of Roman ethnographic writing and administrative structures. The formation of such identities, and the shaping of these identities by Rome, was a vital part of the process of Roman imperialism. Comparisons across the empire reveal some similarities in the processes of identity formation during and after the period of Roman conquest, but they also reveal a considerable degree of diversity and localisation in interactions between Romans and others. This volume explores how these practices of ethnic categorisation formed part of Roman strategies of control, and how people living in particular places internalised them and developed their own senses of belonging to an ethnic community. It includes both regional studies and thematic approaches by leading scholars in the field--Publisher website.
